Ring Out the Old, Ring In the New

As 2016 draws to a close and 2017 lies ahead, the team here at Ffotogallery want to thank the artists, audiences and participants, partner organisations, friends and supporters who make our work possible.

This year we have said goodbye to valued staff members Ulrike Smalley, Matt Colquhoun, Anne Siegel, Clare Charles and Chantal Harrison-Lee, and wish them well in their future endeavours. Aleksandra Kraj and Arnaldo James joined us this year on gallery internships and did a fantastic job.

Having been project coordinator since 2013 for the European Prospects programme, and chosen ‘Looking For America’ as the theme for Diffusion 2015, the irony of the Brexit vote and Donald Trump’s election was not lost on us. However, we have continued our international engagement with renewed vigour having shown Alturas Valiauga’s In Trust at Turner House and Tredegar House, Jana Romanova’s Adopted Welsh at Cardiff Contemporary, the Hidden Presence exhibition at Chepstow Museum and Bi Nam – Image and Identity in Iran at Bristol University. We published Corinne Silva’s book Garden State in June. There has been a strong Welsh flavour to Ffotogallery’s exhibition programme this year, with Walter Waygood and Huw Davies’ joint show Where Will I Be and David Barnes’ epic exploration of South Wales’ life in solution. We also partnered up with Iris for the Iris and Me exhibition celebrating ten years of awards from this important LGBT+ film festival.

2017 brings a new year-long partnership programme with Delhi Photo Festival, marking the 70th anniversary of Indian independence. Huw Davies’ Prince will be presented in Stuttgart in March, in partnership with Bildkultur. Throughout May, we stage the third biennial Diffusion festival – for which we have chosen the theme Revolution. And we are mounting a national tour of work by West Wales’ artist Mike Perry addressing some profound social and environmental issues.

See you in the New Year!

ZEITGEIST Galwad Agored

Mae Diffusion 2017 yn archwilio thema ‘chwyldro’ a chyd-destun ehangaf y gair hwnnw. Bydd yn edrych ar adegau o newid cymdeithasol, symudiadau a mudiadau’n ymwneud â rhyddid mynegiant, mynd ar drywydd paradwys a pharch at hawliau dynol a hunaniaeth.

Mae Diffusion yn chwilio am waith gan ffotograffwyr ac artistiaid sy’n cyfleu ysbryd ein hoes, yn tynnu sylw at yr hyn sy’n digwydd, yn cynnig mewnwelediad ac atebion newydd ac yn herio’r status quo.
