Lost for Words is a major exhibition of new work by artist Peter Fraser; one of the most significant photographers to emerge from the new wave of British colour documentary of the 1980s. This new body of work signals a certain departure in his practice, in that it relishes the artificial and illusory — the world of the museum, other worlds, model worlds. As a result, there is a dreamlike quality to many of the pictures.
Fraser’s art does not shout; it is subtle, descriptive, attentive, enigmatic, private and often unexpected. His photography asks questions about how we relate to the world, and the world that is opened up here is often strange, replete with fantasies, illusions and fears.
Fraser has now stopped using film and this work marks his turn to the digital; a process that has given him greater freedom and versatility — not in terms of manipulation, but in the facility and ease with which he can depict things in the world.
As well as the Ffotogallery commission, he recently completed a two and a half year artist residency at Oxford University, the resulting work being purchased for a new Biochemistry building and is currently working on a major new series of photographs in London.
The exhibition is also accompanied by a new 32 colour plate, cloth bound book, provided on a sale or return basis, with a foreward by David Drake (Ffotogallery Director) and an essay by Professor Mark Durden (European Centre for Photographic Research.
