Dance Island

Working with professional dance and video artists, six schools from across Cardiff took part in Dance Island - a unique collaborative performance in which the children explored an imaginary island, where different cultures live in harmony.

200 young people between the ages of 7 – 13 took part in this unique arts event, which took creativity and culture diversity as its themes. Through a series of workshops led by artist Stefhan Caddick, the children created an animated video piece based around five different communities that inhabit a single imaginary island. Each community had a different culture based on the geographical place they lived on the island. The children used these geographical locations to inform and structure the content of their imagery. The project culminated in a performance at St. David’s Concert Hall, with a specially composed score played by live musicians, a contemporary dance performance also developed by the children, and a large scale projection of their work, presented to an audience of 2,000 people.

Dance Island was developed by Ffotogallery in collaboration with Diversions Dance and Cardiff Council’s Schools and Lifelong Learning Service. The performance showcased the work of pupils from Corpus Christi Catholic High School, Christ the King Primary, St Bernadette’s Primary, St Joseph’s Primary, St Peter’s Primary and St Philip Evans Primary Schools.
