Altars are a universal religious phenomenon. They are one of our most focused points of connection with the divine or spirit world; interfaces between ‘heaven’ and earth, between the living and the dead. They are the physical manifestations of what many people fear, respect or believe in most strongly. In Altared Vision, amateur and community activist, Phil Cope takes us on an historical and socio-political journey through Haiti, tracing the roots of the Vodou shrine, a potent embodiment of the Altar icon. His journey ends in Wales, invoking the influence of this central feature of Haitian culture, in a series of photographic dialogues with communities and schools throughout Wales, which idiosyncratically explore the role of the Altar in contemporary Western society.
