Ffolly – Rut Blees Luxemburg

Rut Blees Luxemburg was recently commissioned by the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery to create a new series of works from the city of Swansea.

Through her work she explores the urban landscape at night by photographing empty uninhabited places. Sometimes they depict minute details like a puddle, a pavement or shadows on a wall whilst others show monumental buildings, for example blocks of flats or offices. The resulting works are strange and beautiful, sometimes immediately recognisable whilst others are almost abstract, flooded with green and golden light. Urban landscapes often seem threatening and dehumanising, but through these poetic and seductive works Luxemburg draws us in, makes us look again and hints at new ways of seeing and interacting with the cities we inhabit.

This publication, which accompanies a major one-person exhibition at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery includes seven new large-scale works made in Swansea; with texts from Patrick Lynch, architect and designer of the exhibition, artist Cerith Wyn Evans and Douglas Parks.
