Forthcoming Talks and Events

February FORUM

Thursday 23 February / 6.30pm / Turner House / FREE

This month we will be a ‘Self-Publishing’ special.

FORUM is an informal, monthly event for early career artists, students and graduates, organised by WARP & Ffotogallery. It is a platform for practitioners from various disciplines to exchange ideas, experience and opinions on visual culture.

FORUM is diverse in its nature and has no fixed form. Each FORUM event has its own theme which provides a catalyst for discussion on a range of issues in the context of contemporary arts practice. See the FORUM BLOG for more info, posts about opportunities and an archive of FORUM’s activity.

Also every month FORUM members will have an opportunity to show or discuss new or unfinished works in an informal setting, for feedback and discussion. Bring along work on the night.

Printed Matters: Photobook Symposium

Sunday 26 February 2012, 11.00am – 4.15pm

CHAPTER, Market Road, Canton, Cardiff, CF5 1QE

Tickets: SOLD OUT

Book now online or by phone from Chapter box office (0)29 2030 4400

This exciting one-day event focuses on all aspects of current photography publishing with a lively programme of presentations and panel discussions by a range of invited publishers, photographers, artists and other industry specialists. Confirmed speakers include Johanna Neurath (Thames & Hudson), Anna Pfab (Schilt Publishing), Diane Smyth (British Journal of Photography), Stuart Smith (Smith Design), Matt Stuart (photographer and photobook collector), Ken Grant (photographer and academic), Donald Weber (photographer), Zhao Renhui (artist) and Seba Kurtis (artist).

Printed Matters will open up creative dialogue and enquiry into the industry of documentary and art photography publishing today. Topics that will be discussed include the practicalities and implications of large scale production verses the intimacy of self published work; considering the photobook as an aesthetic and fetishised object and the challenges and opportunities that organisations, presses and larger publishers are faced with in a changing technological and economic market. A screening of the documentary How To Make a Book with Steidl will conclude the event (included in ticket price).

This event has been organised through a partnership between Ffotogallery, Third Floor Gallery and Chapter as part of a wider weekend of events in Cardiff focusing on photography and publishing:

Thurs 23 Feb — Ffotogallery & WARP self publishing FORUM

Fri 24 Feb — Third Floor Gallery opening of ‘Touching Strangers’ by Richard Renaldi

Sat 25 Feb — Ffotogallery Book Arts Fayre

Sat 25 Feb — Ffotogallery Book Launch for Helen Sear — Inside the View
