Exhibitions and events at Ffotogallery

This policy outlines how we work with artists, photographers, organisations and partners. It’s essential for us to be transparent about our working relationship with artists, so we have outlined this information below. We will aim to review this every year, or as required.

Our programme:

Ffotogallery devises, develops and delivers a rich programme of exhibitions and events throughout the year, focussing on photography and lens-based media work that celebrates outstanding practice, supports visual literacy and builds Wales as a more culturally articulate nation; all under the umbrella of challenging injustices locally, nationally and globally - understanding photography as a social tool.

How we decide on our programme:

Exhibitions and events are programmed in one of three ways: Internally, through partnership, or through proposal.

  • Internally programmed exhibitions and events are devised by the whole Ffotogallery team who bring together various expertise and experience to highlight exciting emerging, mid-career and overlooked artists and photographers from Wales, the UK and internationally whose work reflects our values of Creativity, Community, Care & Cymru. Internal programming goes through a rigorous process that involves interacting deeply with the work, often over a number of years, and asking questions of the artist(s), group(s) and questioning the collective call for action from the work.

  • Exhibitions and events programmed through partnership could be, for example, through our commission with the Imperial War Museum through the 14-18 NOW Legacy Fund, which allowed us to present the first solo exhibition of Audrey Albert: Belongers; or as a touring partner for Nationhood: Memory and Hope which was established by Impressions Gallery and Bradford 2025 - in both of these exhibitions we have been closely involved from the start of the project and have contributed meaningfully, which is essential to any partnership. These are developed throughout the year, and we are always interested in co-producing exhibitions and events with other galleries, organisations and groups.

  • Exhibitions and events programmed through proposals can come from individual or groups of artists, photographers, producers and curators at any stage of their career, and we would very much welcome proposals that resonate with our mission, vision and values.

  • Projects outside of this can occasionally be accommodated at specific moments throughout the year as venue hire for exhibitions and projects that still chime with our values.

FAQ’s for Proposals

We don’t use a template for proposals, as each individual should decide what to include, but there are some core questions to think about when approaching a gallery with a proposal. Here are some frequently asked questions when approaching us for an exhibition, project or event.

What do you want to see in a proposal?

  • Contact details (Email, phone, website)

  • All Artists involved, as well as any partnerships or important relationships.

  • What would you like to do and why?

  • How would Ffotogallery specifically be able to help realise the project?

  • How does the project align with Ffotogallery’s mission, vision and values?

  • High quality images or links to images

What sort of timeline should I consider?

  • For exhibitions, we typically programme around 12+ months in advance. We programme this far in advance as we are a small team and it is important that we invest as much time as possible with the artists we are working with. We review exhibition proposals internally twice a year.

  • For events, at least two months in advance is ideal. Event proposals are reviewed typically within two months.

What sort of work do you want to see?

  • We have no preference on what type, style, genre or production of contemporary photography, moving image or lens-based media we exhibit.

  • However we would like to see more proposals from women and non-binary artists/ photographers, as well as proposals from people of African, Asian, indigenous, Latin American, or mixed-heritage backgrounds; as these people have been underrepresented in our programme in the past.

Can I come and talk to you about my proposal?

  • We’re happy to field specific questions via email (get in touch here), however due to our limited capacity, we cannot speak to everyone who is interested in submitting a proposal.

  • If you haven’t visited Ffotogallery before, come and visit or attend an event and say hi to the team to get to know a bit more about what we do.

Will I get paid?

  • Fees and contributions are discussed and agreed on a project-to-project basis.

Where should I send a proposal?
