MASCOT ME with Dr Kath Ashill

Artist and drag king Kath Ashill invites you to delve into the fantastical world of mascots. Mascot me / Masgot fi is a collaborative research project that seeks to exchange knowledge around mascoting as a craft situated in queerness and allyship.

Facilitated through the artists practice which uses theatricality to open up dialogues, we will read, look at art, watch videos and listen to sound to deep dive into the queer world of the mascot. This session has been developed as part of the artist’s work with Queer Roots Collective based in North Wales.

No advance preparation or reading needed, come and share in a relaxed setting.

About Kath Ashill:

Kathryn is an artist, performer and drag-king based in Barry. Their practice combines drag, performance, video and installation, embracing DIY approaches and theatrically to present their personal experiences. Weaving together disjointed narratives, observations, history and locations, their work navigates the frictions and clashes of disabled, queer and working-class experiences against rigid social and academic structures.

Their work has been presented across Wales, the UK, Europe and the US. Kathryn completed an MFA at The Glasgow School of Art in 2015. They hold a PhD from the University of Manchester (funded by the Wellcome Trust) exploring interspecies coworking relationships across art, human health and climate justice, and were selected as one of the inaugural artists on the Future Wales Fellowship in 2022. Kathryn will present a major solo exhibition at the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, in Spring 2027 which focuses on their lived experiences of disability and climate crisis.
