What is lost…. What has been

Preview: Thursday 16 June, 6pm

Ffotogallery is delighted to present What is lost…what has been, a solo exhibition of photographic works by Welsh artist John Paul Evans, taking place from 17 June – 3 September 2022.

What is lost …what has been is a visual soliloquy to ‘absent friends’, people I considered my family. The works are also a coda to my installation in the sweet bye & bye which was a photographic cathexis in response to the death of my closest friend in Dec 2017. His death brought back memories of my father’s close friend, who died some years before.

The autoethnographic process of weaving one’s personal history into a visual dialogue is useful to explore photography’s tendency towards memorialisation and also to analyse ideas of belonging/otherness, mourning and melancholia in relation to the photographic family album.“

John Paul Evans is a Welsh-born photographic artist and academic who now lives in Devon, England. His work explores the polemics of gender representation in photography. He has received various international awards including the 2016 Hasselblad Masters Award. He was winner of the Dodho Magazine B&W Award 2017, KL Photo awards 2017, Bokeh Bokeh portfolio awards 2017 & 2018, Pride Photo Awards 2014.

Mental Health Awareness Week at Ffotogallery

© Nelly Ating

In 2022, Mental Health Awareness Week takes place 9-15 May on the topic of ‘Loneliness’. Loneliness is affecting more and more of us in the UK and has had a huge impact on our physical and mental health during the pandemic. Our connection to other people and our community is fundamental to protecting our mental health and we need to find better ways of tackling the epidemic of loneliness. We can all play a part in this and at Ffotogallery we are inviting you to join us for four days of activities and talks with a focus on mental wellbeing and loneliness.

Each evening between Wednesday 11th – Friday 13th, we will be holding discussions with artists / photographers Suzie Larke, Jo Haycock, Iko-Ojo Mercy Haruna and Nelly Ating, looking in depth at how they use their imagery to depict mental health struggles, the issues and influencing factors which can affect our health and well being and to share their own stories.v

On Saturday 14th May we will be holding a whole day of activities with a focus on improving our well being and to tackle loneliness. Activities include pompom making, board games, reiki and more.
